The Heritage of Ilkal

A Legacy Woven Through Generations

The Ilkal Saree, originating from Ilkal in Bagalkot district, Karnataka, is a centuries-old handloom tradition with a heritage of over 1,200 years. Known for its comfort, durability and distinctive craftsmanship, it is traditionally woven using cotton, silk and art silk.

For generations, the Ilkal Saree has been recognised for its distinctive body, border, pallu and unique weaving technique. Its traditional body features elegant stripes, squares and geometric patterns, creating a simple yet timeless foundation.

The Gomi (Ilkal Dadi), Paraspet and Gaadi borders give the saree its signature character. Traditional Ilkal weaving is celebrated for its bold and vibrant colours, including deep red, maroon, green, blue, orange and black, which bring richness and individuality to the weave.

The pallu, or Seragu, is traditionally known for its striking red-and-white arrangement and geometric woven designs, creating a distinctive finish that is instantly recognisable as Ilkal.

What makes Ilkal truly unique is the Tope Teni technique, where the body and pallu are joined through a series of interlocking loops—a specialised skill preserved through generations of weavers.

GI Recognition

Ilkal Sarees received Geographical Indication (GI) registration on 24 September 2007, under GI number No.43, recognising their geographical connection to the Ilkal region, traditional weaving techniques, distinctive designs, materials and generations of craftsmanship.

More than a saree, Ilkal is a living heritage of Karnataka—woven through generations and carried forward into the future.
